A quarter-landing turn is where the stairs go up to a flat platform, then change direction by 90 degrees. If the landing is level and wide enough, it’s sometimes possible to fit a straight stairlift that terminates at the landing, allowing you to step off, cross the landing, and use a second lift for the upper flight. Whether this works depends on your mobility and the layout of the landing. If it’s not practical, a curved stairlift running the full length of the staircase is the cleaner solution.
Fan Turn (Winder Stairs)
Fan turns – sometimes called winder stairs – are where the steps themselves taper and change direction rather than meeting a flat landing. A straight stairlift cannot safely negotiate a fan turn. If your stairs have this layout, a curved stairlift for curved stairs is the only option.
Half-Landing (L-Shaped or Dog-Leg Staircase)
