"Can I safely fit a used stairlift I've found on eBay without experience?"
There has been a growing trend in the last few years of people selling used stairlifts on sites like eBay, Gumtree etc. Here are some things to consider before buying and trying to fit a used straight or curved stairlift yourself.
Can I save money and fit a used stairlift myself?
- DIY installing a used stairlift is not advisable. There are many safety features to consider which unless you are a trained fitter you will not have knowledge of. A stairlift fitted incorrectly can result in serious injury and harm. Is it worth risking a loved one's health to try and save money?
- Without the proper training, tools and experience, stairlifts can be easily damaged when removing or during transit. There are many sensitive safety features which will stop the lift from working if damaged or moved. If you need replacement parts for your stairlift, all major manufacturers including Stannah, Brooks, Acorn, Handicare etc will only supply parts to professional engineers that have undergone their in-house training programs.
Will a stairlift I have seen for sale fit my staircase?
- In most cases, the stairlift for sale will not fit your stairs. All straight stairlift rails are cut to the correct size for the staircase it is to be fitted to. With rail sizes ranging from 3400mm to 5400mm and every size in between, you would be extremely lucky to find a direct fit. If the rail is too short, the lift will not reach the top and if it is too long, it will overrun the top. Curved stairlifts have bespoke made rails to accommodate the different angles and bends that all staircases with turns will have. They will also have to be reprogrammed to travel at the correct speeds and levels of the new staircase.
- How long could you or a loved one live without the use of a working stairlift? If you have fitted a lift yourself, you may be waiting weeks for a repair and most reputable stairlift engineers would steer clear of a poorly installed stairlift.
Unless you are a trained stairlift engineer, given the possibility of things that could go wrong on the stairs, it would not be advisable to undertake such a project and independent bodies such as AMEA (Accessibility Equipment Manufacturers Association) and the British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA) strongly advise against self-installation of a home stair lift.
A correctly fitted stairlift will give the user many years of comfortable and safe use of the stairs. Please click on the links below for more information.
